As another busy academic year is drawing to a close, on Wednesday June 25th why not take some time to give your own wellbeing a boost. All of the activities are completely FREE and are open to staff and students of the University.

This will be our fourth and final Wellbeing Wednesday of the year. With a theme of relax and rejuvenate we'll be offering a number of ideas to help you to do just this! Come for tea and cake with your colleagues; register for a trip up to the beautiful gardens at Chancellors; help us break a record by attending a pre-work tai chi session outside University place; take some time out in our revitalised chill out room or attend a relaxing class.  There will be so much to do to help you recharge those batteries and whatsmore - everything is FREE!

Please note that for most of the day's schedule you will need to book a place, simply click on the eventbrite link to the activity you wish to attend. If you find you can no longer attend please could you go back into your booking and let eventbrite know so that your place will be available for another person. Some sessions state just turn up, this means you do not have to book.

To help everyone to feel good, we are inviting as many people as possible across the University to start #RandomActOfKindness.

The big Idea:

  • To give out a number of cards to colleagues
  • These people will then carry out a #RandomActOfKindness on campus in the run up to Wellbeing Wednesday, i.e. they do something nice for someone

Tai chi is a practice of aligning breath, movement, and awareness. Qigong exercises have three components: a posture (whether moving or stationary) breathing techniques and mental focus which helps to cultivate a calm, relaxed state of mind. We’ll be trying to break a campus record with the most people practising Tai Chi at the same time!

The practice of yoga brings together the understanding of the body and the mind, being able to keep our breath at a steady pace relaxes the body and detaches the mind from the worries of the outside world, and what a busy modern outside world we have! So come and leave it all behind for an hour, let the healing effect of some relaxing yoga postures learning to keep the mind cool and collected and the body free from stress and tension.

If you struggle with racing thoughts - a busy brain or ‘monkey mind’, where your mind jumps from thought to thought like a monkey jumps from tree to tree, this class could be useful. These sessions are an introduction to mindfulness practice, which is the skill of bringing awareness to the present moment rather than engaging with our anxious thoughts. It has been proven effective in managing chronic stress, pain and illness.

This session will take you through a range of stretching exercises using bands to assist on some of the exercises. The session will have a relaxing element and finish with some energising exercises.

Learn basic office massage on each other. Bring a work colleague, friend or partner and learn very basic upper back and shoulder/arm massage and neck tension release methods. You will take turns on practicing techniques; massage will be performed in a normal chair and through clothes. This session is ideal for people who sit at computers for long periods of time.
